What We Believe
At the heart of our faith we find the holy Scriptures. These are the primary test of our faith and all other aspects are held up to the standard of Scripture. Following in the heritage of John Wesley, we also look to our tradition and those who have gone before us through the ages for the basis of our theological doctrine. Recognizing that God has given us a mind and life experiences, we look toward reason and experience as the final criterion of the practice of our faith. Together Scripture, Tradition, Reason, and Experience are the lens through which we seek to live our life as follower of Jesus Christ.
The ancient statement known as the Apostles’ Creed is among the most concise statements of faith that is recognized across denominations. This statement contains the tenets of our faith here at FUMC:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic (universal) church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
We don’t pretend to be perfect and we don’t expect you to be either. We are just flawed people striving to find out more about God and what His plan is for our lives. You don’t have to wait to “get your act together”. So just come as you are. You don’t have to do life alone.
We are a group of people learning together how to follow Jesus Christ. Some of us grew up in the United Methodist Church or another Christian denomination and some of us had no Christian background before finding FUMC. We grow in our faith journey together, regardless of when or where we began. Join the journey; we certainly can do more together!
